- Amazon Web Services (AWS) and OpenAI will co-create a Stateful Execution Environment, powered by OpenAI models, available on Amazon Bedrock for AWS customers to develop production-scale generative AI applications and agents.
- AWS will be the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, which enables organizations to build, deploy, and manage teams of AI agents.
- OpenAI needs to consume 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity through AWS infrastructure to support the demands of the Stateful Execution Environment, Frontier, and other advanced workloads.
- OpenAI and Amazon will develop custom models to power Amazon's customer-facing applications.
- Amazon will invest $50 billion in OpenAI.
OpenAI and Amazon today announced a multi-year strategic partnership to accelerate AI innovation in enterprises, startups, and consumers worldwide. Amazon will also invest $50 billion in OpenAI, beginning with an initial investment of $15 billion, followed by an additional $35 billion in the coming months, once certain conditions are met.
OpenAI and Amazon are jointly developing a Stateful Execution Environment that allows developers to maintain context, remember previous work, work across software tools and data sources, and access computation. It will be powered by OpenAI models, which will be available on Amazon Bedrock.
These developer environments represent the next generation of how edge models will be used, allowing seamless access to elements such as computing, memory, and identity. They are designed to handle ongoing projects and workflows.
The environments will be trained to run smoothly on AWS infrastructure and integrated with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and infrastructure services, so that customers' AI applications and agents work cohesively with the rest of their applications on AWS. SRE is expected to launch in the coming months.
AWS will act as the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier, expanding access to OpenAI's most advanced enterprise platform as demand for AI deployment accelerates across various industries.
Frontier enables organizations to build, deploy, and manage teams of AI agents operating within real business systems, with shared context, built-in governance, and enterprise-grade security, without managing the underlying infrastructure. As experimentation progresses to production AI, Frontier facilitates the rapid and secure integration of powerful AI into existing workflows.
Additional investment
THE OpenAI and AWS are expanding their existing multi-year agreement of 38 billion The expansion involves $100 billion over 8 years. It includes OpenAI's commitment to consume approximately 2 gigawatts of Trainium's capacity through AWS infrastructure, which will support demand for the new environment, Frontier, and other advanced workloads. This agreement reduces costs and improves the efficiency of producing intelligence at scale.
Under this framework, OpenAI ensures long-term capacity while working with AWS to deploy specially built silicon for this purpose within its broader computing ecosystem, allowing companies to consume intelligence on demand without managing the underlying infrastructure.
This commitment encompasses both the Trainium3 and the next-generation Trainium4 chips and will power a wide range of advanced AI workloads. The Trainium4, expected to begin rolling out in 2027, will deliver another major performance boost, including significantly higher computational performance in the FP4, expanded memory bandwidth, and greater high-bandwidth memory capacity to support increasingly capable AI systems at scale.
OpenAI and Amazon will collaborate to develop custom models available to Amazon developers to power the company's customer-facing applications. Amazon teams will be able to customize OpenAI models for use in AI products and agents that directly serve customers. These capabilities will complement the models already available to Amazon developers, including the Nova family, offering teams another tool to build and deliver at scale.
“OpenAI and Amazon share the belief that AI should manifest itself in practical and genuinely useful ways for people,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI. “Combining OpenAI’s models with Amazon’s infrastructure and global reach helps us put powerful AI in the hands of businesses and users at real scale.”
“We have many developers and companies eager to run services powered by OpenAI models on AWS, and our unique collaboration with OpenAI to provide Stateful Execution Environments will change what’s possible for customers building AI applications and agents,” said Andy Jassy, Amazon President and CEO. “We continue to be impressed with what OpenAI is building, and we’re excited not only about their choice to invest in our custom AI silicon (Trainium), but also about the opportunity to invest in the company and partner with them for the long term.”
