THE Google News Initiative registration is open for the second edition of the Innovation challenges for Latin America, a program that finances projects focused on new business models and new products for the journalistic ecosystem. Registration is open until May 3.

The Latin America GNI Innovation Challenges is open to organizations of all sizes, including digital natives, startups, NGOs, radio stations, traditional news organizations, freelancers and independent entrepreneurs. The focus is on projects that foster a more sustainable and diverse ecosystem.

The selected projects will receive up to US$ 250 thousand from Google, being able to cover up to 70% of the total cost of the project. In its first edition, in 2019, the Innovation Challenges received more than 300 entries and selected 30 projects.

In Brazil, the chosen ones of this first edition were the following:

  • Radar Facts: in its beta version, Radar Aos Fatos maps and gathers on one platform low-quality content networks about COVID-19, in addition to language standards with uninformative potential on the internet.
  • Congress Radar: The Congress of Focus data journalism platform brings a wide range of information about Brazilian congressmen such as their profile, voting history, proposals, expenses, speeches, patrimony and performance in elections.
  • Cross Graphs: Abraji's project (Brazilian Association of Investigative Journalism) includes the creation of a tool that allows exploring connections between companies, institutions and public people. The platform is available to the general public, but it is mainly aimed at contributing to the work of journalists dedicated to investigative work.
  • They in Congress: project developed by AzMina monitors how each deputy and senator (o) has acted in relevant laws that deal with the rights of Brazilian women, including a ranking of parliamentarians most favorable to the cause in the country.
  • Reload: the project, formed by a consortium of ten journalistic organizations - ((o)) eco, Lupa Agency, Public Agency, Amazônia Real, Congress in Focus, Énois, Marco Zero Content, Ponte Jornalismo, Project #Colabora and Repórter Brasil -, seeks to take information to young audiences through innovative, data-driven formats.
