KPMG recently published a tax tracker called ESG Tax Tracker”. It is a tax tracking and information tool. This mechanism, which is free to access, is regularly updated and uses a company database, covering more than 60 countries, including Brazil. In addition to detailing existing legislation, it also contains information relating to future regulations being considered by governments through formal policy processes or that are in the process of being enacted.

“By using the in-depth information collected by KPMG experts in different countries, the tracker can help people and companies understand, monitor regulations and critically assess the challenges of tax burdens, ancillary obligations, as well as possible opportunities, e.g. , incentives and subsidies to help companies make more assertive decisions”, explains the partner in the tax area at KPMG in Brazil, Marcos Grigoleto.

The “ESG Tax Tracker” tool points to Brazil as a country that currently has tax incentives aimed at sustainable energy applied to producers and innovative projects and investments aimed at the environment, however it does not have tax incentives linked to renewable energy (for consumers), electric vehicles, green energy and photovoltaics (device responsible for converting the sun's energy into electricity), as well as no environmental taxes on various items, such as waste, water usage fees, greenhouse gases, plastics, among others.

“Governments around the world have been seeking to introduce environmental taxation actions, such as carbon taxes and the expansion of tax incentives in order to encourage behaviors that have a positive impact on the environment and that also contribute to the development of more sustainable activities. ”, concludes the lead ESG tax partner at KPMG, Luís Wolf.
