At the AI Ethics for Peace: World Religions commit to the Rome Call event, IBM (NYSE: IBM) reaffirmed its leadership and commitment to Rome's Call for AI Ethics.<\/a>\u00a0Organized by the Vatican's RenAIssance Foundation, in collaboration with the Pontifical Academy of Life, Japan's Religions for Peace, the UAE's Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel's Commission for Interreligious Relations, this latest meeting for the Call of Rome welcomes the co-signaling of Eastern religious leaders and seeks to shape technical progress to support the progress of humanity and inspire peaceful collaboration and global unity for the ethical development of AI, the central tenet of the document.<\/p>\n

This interfaith event follows a series of Rome Appeal milestones in which IBM has played a significant role \u2013 from being one of the\u00a0first signatories<\/a>\u00a0of the document, in February 2020, and lead the\u00a0Global University Summit<\/a>\u00a0of Ethics in Rome, in 2022, organized by Notre Dame University and which includes 40 educational institutions, until the\u00a0signing of the Appeal in 2023<\/a>\u00a0by three Abrahamic religions \u2013 Christianity, Judaism and Islam.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI is a technology with implications for all countries, industries and value systems \u2013 and its benefits should impact all of humanity. It is with great pride that IBM once again renews its commitment to the Rome Call for AI Ethics, joined now by new, like-minded Eastern religious leaders,\u201d said Dar\u00edo Gil, senior vice president and director of research at IBM. \u201cDelivering on our commitments is of paramount importance, and through efforts like the Rome Call and the AI Alliance, we are uniting developers, researchers, industry leaders, and advocates to transparently advance responsible AI rooted in open innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a long-time industry advocate for developing ethical AI, IBM has worked with organizations around the world to ensure that powerful technologies \u2013 like AI \u2013 are created responsibly and ethically from the ground up.<\/p>\n

In 2018, IBM introduced its Principles for Trust and Transparency and was one of the first companies to create an AI Ethics Board as an internal governance instrument around AI ethics, which includes processes, tools, guidelines, education and assessment risk management to oversee the company's AI development and usage practices, as well as partnering with many AI stakeholders to concretely advance AI ethics in a collaborative and inclusive environment.<\/p>\n

IBM's AI approach to ethics is infused throughout the company, including its products and platforms such as\u00a0watsonx<\/a>, and across all IBM AI and data governance assets and risk management solutions, reflecting the maturity of the company's journey and clear vision for the company and its customers. This approach is also used to develop the\u00a0Granite<\/a>, IBM's family of large language models. Such solutions and models reflect the maturity of IBM's journey and vision for its clients.<\/p>\n

Additionally, in December 2023, IBM co-founded\u00a0AI Alliance<\/a>, which now consists of more than 100 companies, startups, educational institutions, government agencies and research laboratories around the world. The Alliance is focused on accelerating open source innovation to improve trust in AI and responsibly maximize benefits for people and society, in an inclusive way.<\/p>\n

The Alliance aims to build a differentiated approach to developing new cultural and social AI tuning techniques and create a more accessible and democratized approach to AI development, with the skills and education to drive the industry forward and will seek to establish more than just guidelines about use, including concrete paths to building AI systems that advance and improve our daily lives.<\/p>\n

The goal is to transform users into AI co-creators, so that each person can maintain full management and control over the use of AI.
