The OpenRAN@Brasil program, which has been conducted in partnership by CPQD and RNP (National Education and Research Network), reached an important milestone with the positive results achieved in the interconnection test between its two deployed testbeds \u2013 in Rio de Janeiro and in Campinas. Carried out at the beginning of May, the test demonstrated the successful operation of the 5G system, in a disaggregated manner, using a 10 Gbps link with a latency of 10 milliseconds for interconnection.<\/u><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n
The experiment involved the implementation of a disaggregated 5G protocol stack, with the 5G core and the Centralized Unit (CU) running in the Rio de Janeiro testbed, located at RNP, while the Distributed Unit (DU) and the Radio Unit (RU) were operated on the Campinas testbed, installed at CPQD. \u201cThe disaggregated 5G system worked successfully in the test, achieving data transfer rates of around 1 Gbps and an average latency of 18 milliseconds, end to end, with jitter (variation in data arrival time) of no more than 5 milliseconds. \u201d, says Eduardo Mel\u00e3o, Connectivity researcher at CPQD.<\/u><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

He highlights that, in previous tests, with all elements of the 5G network in the same location \u2013 Rio de Janeiro or Campinas \u2013 data transfer rates were also around 1 Gbps. \u201cThis means that system disaggregation did not have a significant impact on performance, despite the additional 10 millisecond latency introduced by the testbed interconnect link. This advance reinforces the potential of disaggregated solutions in 5G networks, bringing flexibility and innovation to research and development environments\u201d, adds Mel\u00e3o.<\/u><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n
The OpenRAN@Brasil program testbed is available to others interested in carrying out experiments involving research, education and innovation in 5G and Open RAN networks. The objective of the initiative is to offer a specialized environment, reproducing real operating conditions of telecommunications networks, in which researchers and developers will be able to test and validate different components, functionalities and new ideas in a safe space, without interrupting the operations of commercial networks.<\/u><\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Proposals will be evaluated by a specialized committee, which will determine whether or not to comply with the request to use the platform.
