SAS, a leader in AI and analytics, announced that it has joined more than 200 leading U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) stakeholders to participate in a Department of Commerce initiative to advance the development and deployment of trustworthy and secure AI. Established by the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the US Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC) will bring together AI developers and users, scholars, government and industry researchers, and civilian organizations to achieve the mission.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a developer of AI systems, SAS understands the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence. SAS is committed to the development, implementation and dissemination of trusted AI systems that help enable sustainable advances and responsible innovation for our customers, the economy and society,\u201d said Reggie Townsend, vice president of the Business Practice. \u201cAISIC will provide a crucial service, directing the best of AI innovation from a perspective of responsibility and collaboration. \u201cThe US government has an important role in setting standards and developing the tools necessary to mitigate risks and exploit the enormous potential of artificial intelligence. President Biden has directed us to use all resources to achieve two main goals: setting security standards and protecting our innovation ecosystem. This is exactly why we created the US AI Safety Institute Consortium\u201d, explains secretary Gina Raimondo. \u201cWith President Biden\u2019s historic executive order, we can confirm that the United States is at the forefront, and by working with this group of leaders from industry, civil society, and academia, we can address the challenges and develop the measures and standards necessary to maintain America\u2019s competitive advantage and develop responsible AI.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

The consortium includes more than 200 companies and organizations that are at the forefront of the development and use of AI systems, as well as civil representatives and academic teams that are structuring the basic concept of how AI can and will transform society. These entities represent the country's largest companies and innovative startups; developers of the world's most advanced AI systems and hardware; important members of civil society and the academic community; and representatives of professions with deep involvement in the current use of AI. The consortium also includes state and local governments and nonprofit organizations. Furthermore, it will count on the collaboration of organizations from nations with the same interests, which play a fundamental role in establishing interoperable and effective security around the world.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Artificial intelligence has been an integral part of SAS software for decades, helping customers across industries capitalize on advances in artificial intelligence. The explosion of generative AI has made responsible innovation a priority, requiring a complete approach that involves people, processes and technology.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

While SAS has always cultivated ethics and customer service, the rapid spread of AI led the company to create the SAS Data Ethics Practice (DEP). DEP enables SAS employees, customers, and the broader analytics community to develop data-driven systems that promote human well-being and autonomy. DEP includes data scientists and business development experts who work side by side with the people who create and develop our AI technologies.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n
