Leading operator in Brazil migrates legacy IT virtual machines to a common cloud-native platform, reducing the scalability time for business-critical workloads by 99%.
Red Hat, a world leader in providing open source solutions, announced today that Telefônica Brasil (Vivo), a leading telecommunications company in the country, has migrated its business-critical service bus production environment, previously based on legacy virtualization, to Red Hat OpenShift. This strategic change provides the operator with an agile and scalable foundation for its specific IT workloads, resulting in a 99% reduction in resource scalability time and a 95% reduction in storage consumption.
Faced with pressure to reduce operating expenses (OpEx), Vivo sought to eliminate the complexity and increasing costs associated with its legacy virtualization infrastructure. By standardizing its operations on Red Hat OpenShift, the industry's leading hybrid cloud application platform based on Kubernetes, the company unified the management of modern cloud-native applications with remaining IT virtual machine (VM) workloads on a single, more consistent platform.
According to Gino Grano, Global Vice President of the Communications Service Providers segment in the Americas at Red Hat, the initiative represents an innovative practice in the Brazilian telco ecosystem: “Vivo is a clear example of a visionary tech company that recognizes legacy virtualization as a potential obstacle to the agility and cost efficiency required by its transformation. By migrating critical workloads to Red Hat OpenShift, the company not only achieved significant infrastructure savings but also built a sovereign and AI-ready foundation capable of evolving at the same speed that the market demands.‘
The migration of the IT production environment, the engine that underpins Vivo's CRM, order management, and online store, generated immediate technical and business results, including:
- Rapid scalability: The company now scales its IT environment in 10 minutes, compared to 1,440 minutes (24 hours) previously — an improvement of 99%.
- Improved customer interactions: The new platform reduced response times for collecting customer data and billing queries by 42% and 61%, respectively.
- Infrastructure efficiency: By migrating to a containerized bare metal architecture, Vivo reduced IT CPU consumption on the 55% and memory usage on the 65%.
- Faster maintenance: The IT team reduced patch application time by 91%, from four hours to just 20 minutes.
Foundation for native AI operations
Beyond the immediate efficiency gains, this transition propels Vivo toward intelligent and autonomous operations. By eliminating the constraints of legacy virtualization in its IT stack, the company has built an environment primed for specialized AI models, capable of further optimizing back-office performance and system efficiency.
For Guilherme Marinasco, senior management and platform & product engineering at Telefônica Brasil (Vivo), the partnership drives AI advancements across the entire ecosystem. “Our goal is to offer the most reliable and innovative digital services to our 116 million customers. Modernizing our core infrastructure to an open hybrid cloud with Red Hat’s common cloud-native platform allows us to respond more quickly to customer needs, reduce our environmental footprint through better resource utilization, and ensure the flexibility needed to lead the development of next-generation AI and cloud-native workloads.”
