ABES

A live broadcast hosted by ABES analyzes the impact of the Supreme Court's decisions on platform liability and the risks to freedom of expression in the digital environment.

The Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES), one of the main representative entities of the information technology and software sector in Brazil, with the support of FecomercioSP, promotes this Wednesday, July 2, at 4:30 pm, a live broadcast with leading experts to discuss the impacts of recent decisions by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) on the Civil Rights Framework for the Internet, legislation that regulates the rights and duties of users, companies and the government in the digital environment in Brazil.

The debate comes at a crucial moment for the Brazilian digital ecosystem. The Supreme Federal Court (STF) has been ruling on cases that could significantly alter how digital platforms are held accountable for content published by third parties, as well as the role of private moderation and the guarantee of freedom of expression on the internet. Among the points under discussion are the constitutionality of provisions of the Brazilian Civil Rights Framework, the definition of when a platform can be held liable for illegal content, and the limits on content removal without a court order.

"The Supreme Federal Court's decisions regarding the Brazilian Civil Rights Framework for the Internet could establish a new framework for responsibilities and freedoms in the digital environment. It is essential that this debate be broad, technical, and balanced to ensure legal certainty and preserve the principles that underpin the internet in Brazil, such as net neutrality and freedom of expression," says Andriei Gutierrez, president of ABES.

Experts warn that these decisions could change the "rules of the game" in the digital environment, with direct consequences for technology companies, startups, content producers, media, users, and the government itself. The meeting, organized by ABES, aims to clarify these impacts, foster informed debate, and contribute to the construction of a balanced regulatory environment that promotes innovation, legal certainty, and respect for fundamental rights.

The panel discussion, which will be moderated by Andriei Gutierrez (president of ABES), will feature academic Demi Getschko (a key figure in the implementation of the internet in Brazil); lawyers Ronaldo Lemos (founder of ITS Rio, specialist in internet regulation, and one of the authors of the Marco Civil) and Rony Vainzof (partner at VLK Advogados and consultant to FecomercioSP on digital law and data protection issues); and Daniella Caverni, Director of ABES and leader of the Association's Data Protection Working Group. The event will feature interpretation in Libras and will be broadcast live. Attendance is free, with prior registration. link.
