Cloud, data and Artificial Intelligence technologies will bring more speed to the operation that performs more than 15 million healthcare transactions per month

Orizon, healthtech that belongs to Grupo Bradesco and is responsible for a database with transactional information of about 16 million lives of Brazilian supplementary health, is carrying out the migration journey to Azure, Microsoft's cloud platform.

The objective is to gain innovation in the development of its data models, flexibility to support access peaks and optimize resources to accelerate deliveries, improving performance and reducing operating costs, which have grown exponentially in recent years.

Every day, the company analyzes and authorizes more than 500,000 consultations, from a blood count to highly complex surgeries, through systems that connect about a quarter of health plan beneficiaries in the country to 220 thousand providers, 23 operators and 12 thousand pharmacies. For this, Orizon relies on big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, mainly in the development of models based on machine learning (machine learning).

The high volume, which reaches up to 15 million transactions per month, therefore requires a technological infrastructure that ensures speedy response time in order to streamline patient care, in addition to protecting their data.

“With the technology, operators and service providers can quickly analyze patient requests and instantly respond to their requests, in addition to avoiding unnecessary procedures,” explains Orizon CIO Edmundo Maron.

To improve this process, Orizon has embarked on a journey of modernizing data infrastructure in the cloud, relying on the latest solutions from Azure. In 2020, the partnership with Microsoft and Blueshift, a technology company specializing in big data, enabled a project to migrate the legacy environment on premises to Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Databricks.

"The project allows Orizon to have a more modern computational resource, accelerating its digital transformation process with the help of the cloud and the possibility of integrating environments, allowing new implementations in its infrastructure digitally", says Ricardo Fernandes, vice-presidential president of Enterprise Business at Microsoft Brazil.

“It was a very satisfactory partnership with Microsoft to implement the Modern Data Platform project, which resulted in a state-of-the-art architecture to serve our analytics environment”, comments Gustavo Lima, Orizon's Big Data and Analytics coordinator.

Lima also emphasizes that, on the same platform, they achieve the flexibility to meet the entire range of data and production of machine learning models. “The synergy of the teams and the quality of deliveries really surprised us positively, not to mention the standard of excellence provided by Microsoft in terms of customer experience”, he says.

To improve communication and gain scale, Orizon started using Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD), a remote desktop capable of connecting and integrating employees wherever they are; a data management tool, in compliance with the General Data Protection Act (LGPD); and a billing solution integrated with customer service platforms to automate the process and enable a 360° view.

All of these tasks are performed in Azure. Thus, Orizon's customers are able to improve the assessment of their market share, verify the competitiveness in the market and the receptivity of their offers, among other data-based intelligence.

With processes from 20 to 30% faster, Orizon is already making moves to accelerate the project phases planned for 2022. “The trend is to have everything in the cloud. We are well advanced and already entering the fourth of five planned stages. We have already trained our employees and prepared the environment to receive the necessary workloads, in addition to taking care of governance and security to make everything work”, says Maron. "With this intelligence, we will certainly be even more assertive, we will have more gains and many insights to further improve our customers' experience."

With the completion, the company also anticipates a reduction in the total cost of ownership by 73% over the next three years for the analytics environment.
