On May 29, Microsoft released its Environmental Sustainability Report 2025, detailing the company's progress towards the environmental goals set for 2030: being carbon negative, water positive and zero waste, in addition to protecting ecosystems.

The report covers fiscal year 2024 and highlights important achievements, even as global demand for computing and artificial intelligence increases.

The main highlights of the report include:

  • Carbon negative: Microsoft has signed agreements to purchase more than 22 million metric tons of carbon removal in FY24 — more than all previous years combined. Despite the growth in total emissions, there was a 29.9% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions compared to 2020.
  • Positive water: The company has already provided access to clean water and sanitation for more than 1.5 million people and is on track to replenish more water than it consumes globally. New data center projects eliminate the use of municipal water for cooling, saving more than 125 million liters per facility per year.
  • Zero waste: the target of diverting 75% of construction and demolition waste was exceeded six years ahead of schedule, reaching 85% in FY24. The reuse and recycling rate of servers and components reached 90.9%.
  • Ecosystem protection: The goal of protecting more land than Microsoft uses was reached in 2022 and has already been exceeded by more than 40%. Initiatives such as AI for Good Lab and Planetary Computer are driving biodiversity conservation using AI.
  • Investments in climate innovation: Microsoft's Climate Innovation Fund has invested more than $1,400,000 in technologies such as direct carbon capture, sustainable fuels, and advanced building materials.
