Contestants must use technology to solve real-world humanitarian and business problems

Once again, with the support of SAS, a benchmark in analytics, registration for the Hackathon SAS 2023. SAS is chasing big ideas and big data experts and novices — including developers, students, startups, SAS customers and partners — to create solutions that will be taken to market or implemented in their organizations.
In 2022, 1,300 people from 75 countries signed up. More than 50 teams presented their business cases. Some of the innovative projects involved issues such as optimizing the Canadian government's natural disaster relief plan, protecting smallholder farmers from the impacts of climate change, and improving access to web forms for people with disabilities.
“Data scientists and enthusiasts: we invite you to look at the biggest challenges in your industry and your neighborhood. How would you use SAS technology, open source tools and data to 'hack' a solution that improves your world?” asks Einar Halvorsen, Senior Principal Program Director at SAS.
“Find us online and bring your curiosity,” urges Peter Lundqvist, lead program director at SAS. "Your team will have a SAS mentor, free access to our industry-leading software suite, and a month to accelerate your vision." Attendees will also have access to enablement resources, virtual learning labs, trainings and much more.
Hackathon SAS offers inspiration and hands-on experience for both novices and those looking to refresh their skills. To the Dataversity, only 21% of 16-24 year olds are data literate, and only 24% of the global workforce consider themselves “completely” data literate. Many still struggle to visualize what is possible to accomplish with analytics in the real world.
data for good
Past participants have used SAS Viya, newly available on the Microsoft Azure store, as well as natural language processing, machine learning, advanced modeling, Python, and more to accomplish the following:
- LangTech Team: Cameroonian data scientists have documented four of Cameroon's indigenous languages, preserving their cultural legacy and enabling better local services and greater participation in the national conversation.
- War on Cancer Team: During the SAS Hackathon, the team interviewed users of the popular cancer research app to better understand patients' mental health status. The result? A sea of insights to help healthcare professionals and chatbots that guide patients to mental health resources.
- JAKSTAT Team: The big winner of Hackathon SAS 2022 has developed a platform to optimize the emergency relief against COVID-19 released to the small companies that make up the majority of the Indonesian economy, stimulating resilience among entrepreneurs in the capital and in the country as a whole.
