“The objective is to ensure the origin and quality of the product, with transparency for all links in the beef production chain”, says José Reynaldo Formigoni, manager of Blockchain Solutions at CPqD. For this, the developed system creates a blockchain-based digital identity for each ox to be tracked. It is for this identity that information about the animal, as well as the formation of production batches, movements, health data, quality and transformation into products, are exchanged between the various actors in this chain - which involves from the production phase to the farm, processing in the industry (when each part of the ox is identified) to the availability of meat at retail. With this, a reliable and safe audit trail of the animal's origin is created.
“If a disease is detected in cattle on a farm or region, for example, it is easier to trace the parts of all the cattle that may have been contaminated, which makes the location more efficient and reduces the losses resulting from the meat recall” , explains Formigoni. He adds that the integration of blockchain technologies into this system will provide transparency and reliability (with guaranteed immutability) of data for all actors that are part of the meat production chain.
Vasco Picchi, Director of New Business at Safe Trace, also highlights that the new solution also allows for other important characteristics for consumers, such as the socio-environmental compliance of properties, animal welfare, quality assessments and the entire path taken by the product. “This way, it is possible to guarantee greater transparency and reliability to all the information that leads to the choice and valuation of the product”, says Picchi.
In this project, CPqD was responsible for creating the blockchain network and smart contracts, as well as developing the services layer – which includes the APIs for integration with third-party systems (which are part of the network). The tool used in the development was the Hyperledger Fabric platform, maintained by the global initiative The Linux Foundation.
