Last Thursday (27/06), Brasília hosted the event CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGES IN BRAZIL”, an initiative organized by ABES, Assespro Federation, FecomercioSP and Fenainfo. The meeting brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss growing cyber threats and outline strategies to strengthen cybersecurity in the country. The possible creation of a National Cyber Security Agency was cited by several of the panelists and budgetary issues would be making its implementation difficult. Cybersecurity is a fundamental axis of digital transformation. In addition to leading the organization of the event, Marcelo Almeida, director of Government Relations at ABES, was the seminar's master of ceremonies.

The opening was led by Senator Esperidião Amin, rapporteur of the Permanent Subcommittee on Cyber Defense of the Federal Senate, chaired by Senator Renan Calheiros. In his speech, Amin highlighted the importance of debating and stimulating awareness around cybersecurity. He highlighted data from the World Economic Forum, which indicates that if cybercrime were a country, it would represent the third largest economy in the world. “Cybecrime has become sophisticated to alarming levels, requiring institutional mobilization in the face of growing threats,” said the senator. The Federal Senate has plans to hold public hearings on the matter in order to advance debates and actions.

Andriei Gutierrez, Vice-President of ABES, also made an important intervention. He highlighted that cybercrime is a global phenomenon, which demands a global view on the subject. Gutierrez warned against the creation of regulations that could make access to technologies to combat cybercrime unfeasible and emphasized the need for professional training policies in the area of information security in Brazil.

The opening panel, titled “Cybersecurity Regulatory Challenges“, also included the participation of other important names in the sector: Christian Tadeu, President of the ASSESPRO Federation, Caio Lima, representative of FECOMERCIO/SP, and Gerino Xavier, President of FENAINFO. These leaders discussed the complexities surrounding cybersecurity and the need for integration between companies and governments.

The event continued with the panel “State of the Art of Cybersecurity in Brazil”, mediated by Senator Izalci Lucas. The debaters, Carlos Sampaio, leader of the ABES Cybersecurity GT, Rodrigo Fragola, CEO of Ogasec Cyber Security and President of Assepro/DF, and Luana Tavares, founder and CEO of the National Institute for Combating Cybercrime (INCC), discussed the practices more advanced and effective in cybersecurity in the international context, warned about the risks and the need for integration between actors.

In the third panel, “State Participation in Cybersecurity”, mediated by senator Sergio Moro, debaters such as Marcelo Malagutti, advisor to the GSI/Presidency of the Republic, and Gustavo Santana Borges, member of CNCIBER – National Cybersecurity Council, addressed the crucial role of the State in protecting critical infrastructures and formulating public policies of cybersecurity. Smart homes, the internet of things, autonomous cars are examples of innovations that will require intensive protection against cybercriminal attacks.

The event “CYBERSECURITY CHALLENGES IN BRAZIL” proved to be a fundamental meeting point for exchanging knowledge and strengthening collaboration between the public and private sectors around a topic as sensitive and vital as cybersecurity. With valuable information and high-level debates, the need for a robust and integrated cybersecurity strategy in Brazil was highlighted, highlighting, once again, that protection in cyberspace is an urgent national priority.
