Debate on the importance of Reeskiling and Upskiling
Despite not being an official part of the vocabulary of the Portuguese language, the terms Reeskiling and Upskiling have been used for topics related to becoming skilled at something or developing. Both presuppose an effort aimed at training and are on the rise, mainly because the speed with which innovations and technologies evolve - digitization, automation and artificial intelligence - make workers have to constantly update themselves - a concept known as lifelong learning, or “continuous learning”.
And, given the relevance of these issues in the current context, the ABES CONFERENCE 2021 - EXPONENTIAL WAVES AND DIGITAL RESILIENCE, organized in partnership with the portal The Shift, dedicated the third day of the event (09/16) to analyzing the Human Factor, and discussed the importance of Reeskiling and Upskiling of professionals for the new economy. The event has platinum sponsorship from Oracle and master sponsorship from Amazon Web Services (AWS), IBM, Sky.One Solutions, TOTVS and CAESBRA.
For Danielle Andrade, Head Univerisity of TOTVS, the development of technology is still a great challenge. “Including people in the knowledge agenda in this technology industry is a crucial factor, because it is in our everyday business conversations”, says the executive.
Sofia Esteves, chairman of the Board of the Cia de Talentos/Bettha.com Group, highlighted the need for adaptation when commenting that “it is necessary to give new meaning to learning. Explain to professionals why we need in this new world to work on new skills and capabilities and what this means for the person”.
Speakers also pointed out the importance of keeping up to date as technology is constantly changing. Jeni Shih, Ecosystem Enablement of IBM Technology Sales in the Americas, pointed out that “companies have a responsibility to provide professional training for those who are still in schools and universities, because technology has accelerated so much that we created this gap in skills that we talk so much. In other words, what we learned today, three months from now it will be necessary to revisit, to relearn again. And digital transformation was what I saw the most over 32 years within IBM”.
Paul Ferreira, professor of Strategic Management at Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC), reinforced the change that the pandemic has brought to the internal development of professionals: “We are facing a new meaning of talent and its management. Despite the crisis and the severe economic implications faced by most companies, one thing we've noticed in the surveys is that most employers realized it was the perfect time to expand their teams' skill sets, especially in soft skills, short term and productivity”, he explained.
ABES CONFERENCE 2021 – EXPONENTIAL WAVES AND DIGITAL RESILIENCE took place on September 14, 15 and 16 in digital and free 100% format. The event had its programming organized in daily thematic tracks: digital resilience, business environment and human factor, respectively.
