Cris de Luca interviews Thiago Camargo at ABES CONFERENCE 2021

Thiago Camargo, Director of Technology at Prospectiva and former National Secretary for Digital Policies at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), was the special interviewee, on September 15, at ABES CONFERENCE 2021 - EXPONENTIAL WAVES AND DIGITAL RESILIENCE, organized in partnership with The Shift portal. The executive spoke about the regulatory aspects that impact companies in the technology sector. The chat was conducted by journalist Cris de Luca.

In Thiago's assessment, when those responsible focus on regulating big techs, which are currently accused of violating privacy, encouraging compulsive behavior and weakening democracy, they also end up affecting small techs. Laws can become barriers to innovation as rules affect all companies without distinction. In this way, the legislation ends up generating legal uncertainty.

Thiago is critical of the General Data Protection Law. He explained that when the discussion on legislation started, the focus was on consumer rights and Brazil ended up importing a European discussion. LGPD can “take away the possibility of new business models” based on the exchange of personal data or browsing history, for example, from a negotiation between the consumer and the company. “The constant requirement of consent generates consent out of tiredness”, he pondered.

The executive commented on the challenges of trying to regulate Information Technology or Artificial Intelligence, as they are present in the most different segments, such as the automotive sector and health, areas in which the prerogative to regulate is not exclusive to the National Congress.

“As our lives become more digital, regulation of the digital economy also becomes very important. We have to remember that technology is the tool it was necessary for medium and small companies to become more resilient to the point of not going bankrupt during a pandemic”, said the businessman.

ABES CONFERENCE 2021 – EXPONENTIAL WAVES AND DIGITAL RESILIENCE took place on September 14, 15 and 16 in digital and free 100% format. The event had its programming organized in daily thematic tracks: digital resilience, business environment and human factor, respectively.
