Initiative is part of the Águas Brasileiras Program, launched by the Federal Government
The Ministry of Regional Development, the MDR, and the United Nations Development Program, the UNDP, have an open call for tenders to select a company or entity that will develop a platform to leverage river basin revitalization initiatives in Brazil. Registration can be made until July 5th. Find out more at mdr.gov.br.
The initiative is part of the Águas Brasileiras Program, launched by the Federal Government with the aim of increasing the quantity and quality of water available for consumption and for the productive sector.
The tool, which follows the marketplace concept, will put into contact organizations with basin revitalization projects and companies, funds and people seeking to engage with this type of agenda.
According to data from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, Embrapa, in the Cerrado alone, there are more than 32 million hectares of degraded areas.
Luna Viana, special advisor to the MDR, explains the importance of revitalizing Brazilian river basins.
“It is estimated that 74 million people are at risk from water in Brazil. And yet, when we look at the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we see that development challenges are directly or indirectly linked to access to water. If we do not take care of our springs and rivers, we will increase the risk of not achieving the water security necessary for a sustainable development process. We Brazilians need to see water as a good, an asset to be taken care of and managed strategically.”
